The summer solstice has arrived and it is time to review the four seasons square foot beds:
Summer
Swiss
Chard
Garlic
Onions
Parsley
Pea Jaguar
Strawberry
Radish
Leaf Beet
Elephant Garlic
These items should be ready for harvesting in a week's time. All except the radish which seedlings the birds demolished!
Autumn
Beetroot
Tomato
Carrot
Fennel
Pepper (Cyklon)
Celeriac
Leeks
(Jolant)
Dwarf French Beans
Kohlrabi
The beans are a bit far advanced. I don't expect them to hang on for three months so will probably replant with salads in the meantime. The leeks had to be planted out about three times because the birds just loved tugging them out of their planting holes! You see the net is now in place for this reason.
Winter
Carrot
Mooli
Parsnip
Beetroot
Swiss Chard
Celeriac
Swede
Scorzonera
Leek Musselboro
currently | ||||||
Parsley | |||||||||
Pretty much full already (mooli excepted). The parsley from last winter is still doing so well that I haven't the heart to pull it up. Leeks are waiting in the wings. Everything else looking good for 6 months time.
Spring
Parsnip
Broad Bean overwintered
Spring Onion winter hardy
Scorzonera
Winter Density Lettuce
Swiss Chard
Swede
Leek Blue Solaise
Coriander Parsley Chervil
Really just for completeness: 6 square feet still to be sown. Parsnip here is proving more problematic than in the winter bed. I have just recently transplanted a few thinnings from there to top up. Not something I expect to work, but no harm in trying?
I like way this post was plotted: the juxtaposition of the written scheme next to the reality of the photograph.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane. I am trying my best to learn from this experiment.
ReplyDeleteOur leeks are in the wings too still learning their parts. Just hope they are ready for the opening night.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will have prepared them well!
